Antique Longcase Marquetry Clock - LCMAR 106

An excellent, late 17C/early 18C, "all over" bird and flower marquetry longcase clock with 11" square dial and MONTH going movement by Jno. ( John ) Culliford of Bristol.

CASE DETAILS

Flat top walnut and "all over" bird and flower marquetry case with pierced and fretted frieze under the cornice top moulding, plain Doric hood columns with matching rear quarter columns, side windows to hood and concave throat moulding. The trunk with "bullseye" lenticle to trunk door, plus walnut veneered and crossbanded sides and simple, single strip, plinth base. A very fine, very original, attractively proportioned case.

DIAL DETAILS

11" square brass dial ( 10 3/4" showing ) with cast brass "large cherubs head" spandrels, finely matted dial centre, unusual, very attractive, dial layout - the winding squares being low in the dial and with decorative ring turnings to the seconds, date, and winding square holes plus the date aperture enhanced by profuse engraving. A VERY unusual and attractive dial.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

The high quality, knopped and finned, 5 pillar, MONTH going movement having the early form of countwheel striking high up on the backplate.

MAKER DETAILS

Jno. ( John ) Culliford of Bristol is recorded :- "Became a Burgess by marriage on 23rd March 1692." And "Lantern clock by him in the Bristol Museum." There are 3 clocks by him illustrated in "The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650 - 1900" by A.J.Moore but none as fine as this example.
