Very good, high quality, typically "Bristol" flame mahogany, long door, case having decorative brass paterae, eagle/ball centred swan neck pediment with fretted and pierced decoration under, Corinthian capped fluted hood columns, backsplats and side windows to hood. The shaped top trunk door flanked by canted fluted corners with the raised base panel having a similarly themed top. Plain strip plinth.

12" breakarch brass dial with painted ADAM & EVE AUTOMATA to arch - two arms moving + snake curling around the tree of life. Subsidiary dials for - ( left ) Chime/Not Chime and ( right ) tune selector March or Hymn + recessed seconds disc. Finely matted dial centre, unusual "Chinese rococo" cast brass spandrels and blued, cut steel, hands. Substantial strip pendulum with large brass faced bob.

Exceptional 5 pillar, 3 train, 8 day movement, playing music on 10 bells via 18 hammers at 4 o'clock, 8 o'clock, and 12 o'clock + hourly ( rack ) striking to a larger, single bell. Pull repeat for music plus independent pull repeat for hourly ( rack ) strike.

High quality deadbeat escapement. This movement is of such "Best London" quality that I believe it was bought in from a top London workshop and "finished" in Bristol.Please see the Eardley Norton movement p. 175 British Longcase Clocks by Derek Roberts having VERY similar characteristics.

Please see previous comments above. Matthew Worgan is recorded - "Born 1725 son of Thomas Worgan of Bristol, cutler." There were 2 Matthews, father and son.As this clock is circa 1775 , the first year that Matthew II is recorded and there are clocks extant by him signed Matthew Worgan Jnr. ( junior ) I feel that this is a clock by the father, Matthew I who was apprenticed to John Salmon in 1741, married 3rd March 1755 and died in 1798.
