An extremely early, 18C, blue ground, gilt chinoiserie lacquer, 8 day, longcase clock with rare quarter chiming movement by William Atkinson of Sheffield.

CASE DETAILS

Exquisitely proportioned, typical, very early 18C, long door, blue ground case with gilt chinoiserie decoration and twin gilt/gesso wooden finials.Shallow caddy top.

DIAL DETAILS

11" square brass dial with half quarters to outer edge of chapter ring, flying bird engraved finely matted dial centre, "twin cherubs & crown" spandrels, starburst to centre of seconds dial, square date box immediately below dial centre and 3 winding holes for ( from right to left ) 6 bell quarter chime, going, and hourly strike - the usual 3 train configuration.

MOVEMENT DETAILS

Very interesting 8 day movement with unusual hourly ( rack ) striking, strike/silent facility for the 6 bell ( countwheel ) quarter chiming train with trip facility to re synchronise the countwheel function.Unusual, ingeniously thought out and very well executed.

William Atkinson of Sheffield - recorded, "Several longcase clocks reported varying from circa 1700 to circa 1750".

DATE - Circa 1710.
