Superb classic burr walnut brass dial 3 train, 1/4 chiming longcase clock by Brownless of Staindrop. Top quality workmanship with moonphases.

Case: Superb burr walnut case with breakarch top and typical provincial single step base.  
Dial: 12" breakarch brass dial, moonphases to arch with wheatear edge engraving. Shows seconds and date.

Movement: Superb quality 8 day countwheel hourly striking and 1/4 chiming on 6 bells. 5 finned, ringed and knopped pillars to movement. 4 pillars holding dial (top two latched) anchor escapement.  
Maker: Brownless, Staindrop (probably Robert).  
Date: ‘Clockmakers of Northern England’ records Robert Brownless worked at Staindrop, County Durham. His dates and relationship to others of this name is uncertain but he is believed to have been working by about 1720 and to have died in 1744. This example dating by style 1725.
