Case: Long door, plain oak case of good slender proportions with blind pierced fretwork under breakarch top. Good colour and patination  
Dial: 12" breakarch brass dial with finely matted centre and name boss to arch. Particularly attractive engraved and silvered seconds disc.  
Movement: High quality 8 day 5 pillar movement with hourly rack striking on a single bell.  
Maker: James Smyth of Saxmundham (Suffolk). There were three makers of this name and location:
James I 1735 -1766 and James II 1765 - 86 are the only two candidates as James III was was 19th Century
