Title LCMAH 343
Case Good, neat, short door, typically "Bristol" ebony strung mahogany case with swan neck pediment.Typical "Bristol" features include wavy detail to inner edge of hood door, canted corners to trunk and distinctive spire/ball centred "Bristol" swan necks. Brass capped, fluted hood columns, shaped backsplats, simple plain strip plinth to base.
Dial 12" breakarch painted dial by W ( William ) Francis of Birmingham with colourful highland figure with dog to arch, seashell spandrels, matching subsidiary seconds and date dials, polished and punch decorated brass hands. N.B.The dialmaker W. ( William ) Francis worked ( at this period ) from 11, Smallbrook Street, Birmingham, and died in 1833, his widow carrying on from the same address until 1843.
Movement Good quality, 4 pillar, 8 day, hourly ( rack ) striking movement.In period cast iron weights.
Maker Knight & Withers of Bristol recorded 1833 - 1837.
Date Circa 1835 - a very confident attribution given the above recorded dates of the clockmaker and the dialmaker.
Height 85" ( 216cms. ) or 83" ( 211 cms. ) ex. Finial.
