This Longcase Mahogany's Maker - Jones of Chalford.Most likely Henry Jones as Daniel Jones - recorded "married 1st June 1801, ( aged 30 and upwards )" would probably have been too young i.e. still apprenticed when this clock was made say 1780/85, dating by style. Henry is recorded as having made a church clock dated 1769 and also a silvered and engraved dial longcase attributed to late 18C. There is a 30 hour example in Stroud Museum also signed simply Jones Chalford which I have not examined which may have been made by either man

Title LCMAH 329
 
Case Well proportioned, "country mahogany" long door case with central and string inlays to trunk door and base panel. Eagle/ball centred swan neck pediment,
Dial 12" breakarch "minutes numbered" early "Wilson" painted dial having subsidiary seconds dial, "sad mouth" date aperture, raised gesso corner spandrels, and colourful, well executed bucolic vignette of shepherd and shepherdess to arch. The dialmaker, Wilson, is recorded 11, Great Charles St., Birmingham 1780- 1808, died 1809. Blued cut steel hands.Wilson is rated as one of the finest dialmakers, with this an early example.
